Pier Bar "Point 53/09°"

Project Pier Bar "Point 53/09°" Location Hamburg
Client Hamburg Airport
Architect Steven Wiliams Architekten
Completion 2008 Status Completed

The Point 53/09° bar is located right on the airport?s long pier. Every day it is passed by thousands of people who need to be attracted to it. So it was particularly important for the bar to compete with bright daylight to generate the necessary attention. This was achieved by using a successful combination of light materials and artificial light. The material and light effects were presented to the architects and clients by our office in a model on a scale of 1:10 in December 2007. It convinced the planners to abandon their original idea of having a dark-coloured bar. Seeing the model allowed them to sense the atmosphere that passengers would experience.

The bar, as designed by Stephen Williams Architects, consists of a light-coloured central bar which we further emphasise using artificial light. The bar counter and the goods presented on it are lit by a suspended ring of light with adjustable spotlights. HIT lights with a warm glow were chosen to display the goods, reflecting the colours and freshness of the items and creating luminosity.
There are seats for customers around the bar and standing room in the bistro area. The bistro tables are lit by small points of light in zones which direct the patron?s attention to the table in the same way as candle light does. Also a soft, balanced reflection makes people?s faces look more attractive as it eliminates hard contrasts. To add to the warm, pleasant atmosphere only halogen lights are used in customer areas.

The concept of well-being and creating a sense of peace in the turmoil of a busy airport is emphasised by having a separate lounge area. From the comfort of light-coloured seating you can watch the air traffic from an oasis of calm or watch the evening sunset.

Slits of light in the ceiling fitted with dimmer lighting components are recurring features in the gastro area.  These symbolise the international network emphasising the theme of ?from here to the world?.
